August 27 | Online Workshop for New to Debate + Professional Events

Teachers learn the Public Debate Program formats, including PDP debate and professional events, which are specifically designed to utilize educational and professional communication standards to maximize secondary student learning. The workshop includes primary and advanced public speaking, research, note-taking, argumentation, and refutation skills – essential for successful debating, vibrant classroom discussion, powerful presentation, and sophisticated essay writing.

The first portion of the workshop focuses on the PDP debate format. The second portion of the workshop introduces PDP professional events with the following competitive categories: non-fiction essay, keynote address, and multimedia presentation. The Fall Championship for Professional Events will take place in Southern California on October 21, 2023 with a lower division (grades 8-9) and an upper division (grades 10-12).

Leading the workshop is John Meany who is the Director of Forensics at Claremont McKenna College, the founder of the Public Debate Program and creator of the CHSSA Parliamentary Debate model, and author of more than a dozen textbooks on secondary school and university debating.
