Voices Unleashed: The Transformative Power of the Public Debate Program
Public Debate Program debating is uniquely valuable
Based on a June 2019 independent evaluation of the Public Debate Program, there was agreement among teachers, students, and parents that the PDP contributes to the development of numerous student learning outcomes. Skills related to public speaking, confidence, teamwork, empathy, and civic engagement were most salient. Focus group and student survey commentary indicate positive gains in critical thinking.

Students showed an overall increase in their public speaking confidence levels
“I have been able to find my own voice. I used to be really shy and never said anything. I thought my opinions did not matter. Debate has taught me to form my opinion in a way that does matter to people.”
Students shared high levels for program satisfaction, noting that it was useful in their daily lives and relevant to their interests.
